Top 10 Plain Wrong Record Covers Top 10 Plain Wrong Record Covers

The vaults of dance music history are littered by an abundance of pretty bad record covers. Bargain basements across the land are filled with these artefacts, as musicians insist on conveying their sound visually on an album sleeve when they should really be sticking to their area of expertise. Some are disturbing, some are confusing. Some record covers are just lucky to have somehow made it past the brainstorming stage. It’s amazing how much plain wrong you can fit into … Continue reading

Basement Jaxx to score sci-fi movie Basement Jaxx to score sci-fi movie

Barely months after Daft Punk stowed away their mixing desks having lent their neon-tinged beats to Disney’s tepid tech sequel TRON: Legacy, it has surfaced that the kings of London house Basement Jaxx are scoring forthcoming home-grown sci-fi feature Attack the Block. Although nothing’s yet been confirmed by the guys themselves, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright pretty much let it slip when he tweeted: “Heard some of Basement Jaxx’s score for Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block yesterday. Still … Continue reading

Stars of 2011 – #2: Flight Facilities Stars of 2011 – #2: Flight Facilities

Franco-Japanese label Kitsuné convincingly held onto their reputation of genius-clairvoyant-electro-savants last year, bringing to our shores the neo-italo-disco stylings of mysterious Aussie outfit Flight Facilities. Their first single proper “Crave You” went on heavy rotation last summer in pop-inclined circles as well as on dancefloors, a glowing ode to infatuation featuring the tooth-achingly sweet vocals of songwriter Giselle. Having produced remixes for acts Sneaky Sound System, C90s and James Curd in 2010, Flight Facilities are in demand and due to … Continue reading

Shinichi Osawa – Zingaro EP (Southern Fried) Shinichi Osawa – Zingaro EP (Southern Fried)

With a loop almost as catchy as the theme to Tetris, playing the latest from Shinichi Osawa is like starring in your own platformer.

One of Southern Fried Records’ most active entities, this Tokyo-based producer two years ago gave his own gutsy take on Chemical Brothers’ “Star Guitar”, which is where you probably know him from.

Earlier this year he released his album SO2, and its latest track, “Zingaro”, is a bright, bouncy dose of technicolored electro that lives up to its sprightly name, skipping along happily like the wee prancing pony in the charmingly cut-and-paste-out-of-construction-paper video.

The loop, sounding a bit like something left over from rave (the first time round), is propped up by Osawa’s trademark punchy percussion, and every so often an interlude with more than a passing resemblance to the sugar-coated “Heartbeat” by Annie (which is no bad thing) steadies the pace. But despite these references back there’s something quite fresh about “Zingato”, and of late it’s always nice to hear something that isn’t either a slave to dubstep or yet another 90s pop-trance rehash.

The EP generously features three remixes, with The Kids are Radioactive mix toughening up the cut to make it more club-friendly, while LightsOverLA allows the shimmering synths of those Annie-esque interludes to take centre stage. Fabian chops it up and gives it an entirely different energy.

Not for everyone, but in a relentlessly grey British winter there are few places more inviting than Super Zingaro Land.

Zingaro EP is available now on Beatport and Juno Download.

Guest DJ of the Week #5: Ash Thomas Guest DJ of the Week #5: Ash Thomas

As the Ibiza season draws to a close, we’re keeping it local with another sample of some homegrown talent, in 23-year-old Brightonian Ash Thomas. The music production student and ardent campaigner against the dodgy-jukebox-bar-DJ presents a cheeky mix, showcasing sparse wonky electro and gloriously massive vocals, keeping a good pace with some dazzling reach-for-the-lasers moments. We’re loving the video game vibe at the beginning. The mix features Afrojack and Steve Angello, with Swedish House Mafia bringing play to a soaring … Continue reading

Polymorphic – Apocalypse (Noise Invaders remix) (Coco Machete) Polymorphic – Apocalypse (Noise Invaders remix) (Coco Machete)

Another beast of a release from the Coco Machete imprint

Alert the wardens. The animals are trying to escape from the electro zoo.

Coco Machete have outdone themselves again, bringing us Moscow-based Polymorphic’s Apocalypse EP, which with its quirky stylings and hectic pace wouldn’t be out of place in the record bags of Crookers or Erol Alkan.

The highlight is the Noise Invaders remix, a menagerie of synthesised shrieks, purrs and what could be the trumpeting of frenzied elephants joining forces in a solid tune that chugs along like a tractor.

Session remixers Noise Invaders (most recently turning their hands on Chromeo’s ‘Don’t Turn The Lights On’) have stayed true to the original, only given it spikes and claws to walk around on. The breakdown takes us back to early-90s rave country, while crunchy percussion keeps things tight as a cat’s… well, you know. In a sandstorm.

If this is the apocalypse, let’s just lie back and enjoy it.

The Apocalypse EP features the original mix as well as remixes by Marseille and Noise Invaders. It’s available now on Beatport.
