Further cementing his old reputation as a master of the beat, Jason Phats is back for more frenzied house-action, this time with Juan Corbi and “Al Bam Boom”. As ever with recent Phats tracks, remixes are in abundance, this time there are seven; Jason Phats mix, Nick Tcherniak and Steve Thomas mix, Juan Corbi mix, Marchant mix, Corbi Late Night Mix, Jason Phats Dub and the Albambeats remix.
The great thing about this release is that every mix is a different feel, meaning whenever and wherever you’re playing, the track can be played to suit the mood, each mix adapted perfectly for a particular environment. The original is funky and fresh, whilst Jason Phats’ mix uses clever synth hooks reminiscent of 80s video games (without being clichéd) to push you into a Trance state, the at times simplistic but masterfully composed beats hitting you like a freshening up.
Juan Corbis late night mix does exactly what it says on the tin. The toned down elegance of this mix retains the originals main hook but uses lounge style beats to accompany the riff, whilst soothing bass lines provide the atmospheric feeling. There’s still an electro vibe here too, but it’s more developed.
We get the feeling now that Phats is not actually looking for another “Turn Around” – but instead looking to develop a more sophisticated, funky but original style of house, whilst at the same time collaborating with producers from further reaches of the earth, exposing their different approach to house we may be less familiar with.
