Jason Phats & Juan Corbi – Wannabe

You might remember we reviewed Jason Phats first single off his new label “Funkyseptoplasty” and we weren’t too keen on the rather “go-nowhere” feel of the track, but the undeniable talent and skill of Phats meant surely a cracker was only a short while away. Along comes “Wannabe” co-produced with Juan Corbi and on first hear the track is definitely more “go-go” then “go-nowhere”. The funky little pops and cracks and the cutting vocals provide a distinctive house sound that seems to be defining Phats’ recent effort. As with “Funkyseptoplasty” the track feels a little drawn out, but it does feel more enticing.

Along come the remixes and whilst the main melody in Phats’ own edit is much the same, the build up and drops are much more exhilarating. The mid-section build up and drop in particular is brilliant and really sets the bar for the sheer level of anticipation. Again, we can’t help but just feel the track doesn’t quite elevate us like some house music does, and it certainly wouldn’t be the title track of a mix but the production quality is again second to none, the organisation and layout of all the samples and elements is spot on and despite the minor drawbacks, “Wannabe” is a massive stride forward from “Funkyseptoplasty” and yet again we can’t wait to see what Jason Phats comes out with next. The feeling has to be that in one of the tracks every ounce of Phatsenius (Phats-genius for short) is going to come together and we’re going to have a massive, massive track. Oh Jason, you tease!

3.5 stars. A great effort, just needs that extra polish.

HIIO Feat. Terri B! – Something About You

February 28, 2013

South American duo HIIO (pronounced H2O) have arrived in 2013 with their attempt at creating a classic house tune. There’s definitely some classic house vibes here in the synths, the Planet Perfecto influence is pretty obvious. But this track is much slower than anything Planet Perfecto ever put out, and as a result it’s not… View Article

Arty, Nadia Ali & BT – Must Be The Love (Official Music Video)

February 24, 2013

BT is a legend of Trance production, Nadia Ali is a legend of Trance vocals. Any team up between these two is bound to be good, but when you throw in relative newcomer but excellent producer Arty into the mix as well, are we witnessing collaborative genius or are too many cooks spoiling the broth?… View Article

Kirsty – Hands High (Afrojack Radio Edit)

February 23, 2013

Who is Kirsty? We don’t know either, but this looks like her attempt to crack the commercial dance scene and she’s enlisted the help of Afrojack who provides remix duties. Apparently Sander Van Doorn said “supporting!” and David Guetta said “huge!” Although we’d question how much thought they gave to their answers when questioned. The… View Article
