Jason Phats, one half of the legendary duo Phats & Small who had major chart success with “Turn Around” is looking to inject new life into his producing career with new release “Funkyseptoplasty”. Alongside the re-launch of 90s imprint Afrocuts, the single is an attempt by Phats to make a return to form that saw such a sustained period of success. Funkyseptoplasty is most certainly funky by name and nature, the quality of production is tight and the use of samples is well judged and appropriate. At over 9 minutes long however, and with no real climax, the track is bogged down by endless repetition with no real lifting chorus or notable vibe. The quality of the production is extremely good, but unlike chart-topper “Turn Around”, the track lacks any real distinctive vocal hook which for us is what the track really needs. The high level of production means the track will make a great filler during a mix between more anthemic numbers, but the considerable length means you would more than likely want to cut it short. Because of the quality of the production, we hope that this is a sign of things to come, rather than a premature peak. We look forward to the future of Jason Phats…
The track will be released on Afrocuts on the 6th September.
