Jason Phats – ‘Funkyseptoplasty’ (Afrocuts)

afrocuts funkyseptoplasty

Jason Phats, one half of the legendary duo Phats & Small who had major chart success with “Turn Around” is looking to inject new life into his producing career with new release “Funkyseptoplasty”. Alongside the re-launch of 90s imprint Afrocuts, the single is an attempt by Phats to make a return to form that saw such a sustained period of success. Funkyseptoplasty is most certainly funky by name and nature, the quality of production is tight and the use of samples is well judged and appropriate. At over 9 minutes long however, and with no real climax, the track is bogged down by endless repetition with no real lifting chorus or notable vibe. The quality of the production is extremely good, but unlike chart-topper “Turn Around”, the track lacks any real distinctive vocal hook which for us is what the track really needs. The high level of production means the track will make a great filler during a mix between more anthemic numbers, but the considerable length means you would more than likely want to cut it short. Because of the quality of the production, we hope that this is a sign of things to come, rather than a premature peak. We look forward to the future of Jason Phats…

The track will be released on Afrocuts on the 6th September.

Tune of the Week – Tim Berg – Bromance (Aviciis Arena Mix)

If ever a track needed an extended remix, this would be it. Tim Bergs Bromance is a cracking little number by itself, but Aviciis has turned it into an anthemic trance tune that raises the hair on your body and drives your pulse nuts. The build up is simply brilliant, the combination of Bergs guitar (or, at least that’s what we think it is) melody the synths of Aviciis is spot on and the only disappointment we can think of … Continue reading

40 Thieves ft. Qzen – Don’t Turn It Off remixes EP (Permanent Vacation)

The nu-disco stomper that’s been doing the rounds all year in many a purveyor of an overpriced Mojito comes back repackaged in this neat set of remixes.

What began as a cover of a Hot Chocolate track, originally appearing on the flipside of minor 1979 hit “Mindless Boogie” gets re-rubbed by Brennan Green and wizard of editry Greg Wilson, to bring the tune from bar to dancefloor.

You know the original, the shimmery synths, the odd coo of Simmons, that aloof yet flirtatious female vocal courtesy of Sweat (On The Walls) singer Qzen: “You’re quite tasty aren’t you baby?”

Brennan Green stretches out the tune out to a pee break-worthy nine minutes, stripping down the warm cuddly bass for a bit and dribbling acid all over it. It’s good but Mr. Wilson’s edit is the winner here. He deconstructs the cut and puts the bits back together to create a far tighter entity, one which, like any respectable young lady, doesn’t whore itself out all in one go but teases, holds itself back, to ultimately deliver.
